Such a nice pretty blog. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.

It is the "when life gives you lemons award". It is about attitude and gratitude. What a nice award don't you think. I mean sometimes those lemons seem to be flying at us. I think some days I just need a baseball bat to whacked the darned lemons into oblivion....you see there is more than one way to skin a lemon.

Sundays At Tiffany's, James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet - Audio and Book Review

Sundays At Tiffany's, by James Patterson and Gabrielle Charbonnet
Audio and Book review

I got the book from Valerie at Hachette and I got the audio from Anna at Hachette. Thank you ladies.

This is kind of cool. I read the book and listened to the audio at the same time! Okay.. meaning in the car I did the audio and at home I picked up in the book where the audio left off.

The audio cover looks like the hard cover book (first photo) and the paperback book released this year looks like the second photo.

My review - I really enjoyed this book. I had read a lot of different reviews and sometimes for me that is a drag because I get my head all clouded up with other people's expectations of an author. And of course with Patterson many many are followers of his work and they have a lot to say about it being better or worse than the last book you know the whole comparison thing.
I was lucky in this regard. I just picked up a very pretty book, read it, and really enjoyed the story.

It charmed my socks off. It is just the book I needed right now. A spring fling if you will. I enjoyed the sweetness of the book. I loved the setting, the characters, the relationships, and I liked all the name dropping of shoes, clothing, jewelry. Maybe for some it was over done for some, or too expected, or just not a complex enough story. I guess for me I didn't need all that complexity. I liked unspoken and spoken the dialog of the characters. I liked the messed up Mother / Daughter relationship and the obvious problems that stemmed from lack of the "normal" type of motherly love. And as for the the stereotype beefcake hottie boyfriend without a conscious, well, it worked for me.

I loved Jane and I loved Michael. When you really like the main characters that goes a long way to loving a story.

I have to say that one of the best parts of having this blog is reading outside my own box. I don't feel the pressure to be reading a classic, or must- be-read book all the time. I am really relaxing into my reading, enjoying stories, and meeting great friends.

That is not to say I haven't read some really fantastic books. Coming soon, I think I am going to list my top ten favorite books since I started my blog. Another perk of the blog is getting to go back and relive moments from my favorite books.

Okay, now for some details on the book.

Full description: (From Hachette)
As a little girl, Jane has no one. Her mother, the powerful head of a Broadway theater company, has no time for her. She does have one friend-a handsome, comforting, funny man named Michael-but only she can see him.

Years later, Jane is in her thirties and just as alone as ever. Then she meets Michael again-as handsome, smart and perfect as she remembers him to be. But not even Michael knows the reason they've really been reunited.

SUNDAYS AT TIFFANY'S is a love story with an irresistible twist, a novel about the child inside all of us-and the boundary-crossing power of love.

Hachette Giveaway - Girls in Trucks by Katie Crouch

Yes!!!! We have another giveaway.

Girls in Trucks by Katie Crouch

Once again, I am offering another book before I'm able to read it. But, this on is on my list for sure. It sounds like good early summer reading. What a beautiful cover! Win it here and let's read together!

Thank you Valerie from Hachette for hosting this giveaway. I am offering FIVE copies!!

Book Description:
Sarah Walters, the narrator of GIRLS IN TRUCKS, is a reluctant Camellia Society debutante. She has always felt ill-fitted to the rococo ways of Southern womanhood and family, and is anxious to shake the bonds of her youth. Still, she follows the traditional path laid out for her. This is Charleston, and in this beautiful, dark, segregated town, established rules and manners mean everything.

But as Sarah grows older, she finds that her Camellia lessons fail her, particularly as she goes to college, moves North, and navigates love and life in New York. There, Sarah and her group of displaced deb sisters try to define themselves within the realities of modern life. Heartbreak, addiction, disappointing jobs and death fail to live up to the hazy, happy future promised to them by their Camellia mothers and sisters.

When some unexpected bumps in the road--an unplanned birth, a family death--lead Sarah back home, she's forced to take another long look at the fading empire of her youth. It takes a strange turn of events to finally ground Sarah enough to make some serious choices. And only then does she realize that as much as she tried to deny it, where she comes from will always affect where she ends up. The motto of her girlhood cotillion society, "Once a Camellia, always a Camellia," may turn out to have more wisdom and pull to it than she ever could have guessed.

Giveaway details -

The winners will be choosen by a random computer drawing (random.org) on April 14th.

Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand, Carrie Vaughn - BLOG Tour and Giveaway

Welcome to the blog tour for:
***please scroll to the very end to see what other bloggers are saying***

Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand and Kitty Raises Hell, by Carrie Vaughn.

Introducing the Author:
Carrie Vaughn had the nomadic childhood of the typical Air Force brat, with stops in California, Florida, North Dakota, Maryland, and Colorado. She holds a Masters in English Literature and collects hobbies-fencing and sewing are currently high on the list. She lives in Boulder, Colorado.

Please also check out Carrie Vaughn's "happening" website
here.

Kitty and the Dead Man's Hand.

Description (Warning description might contain spoilers for those that are just starting the series)

HONEYMOON IN VEGAS?

Already the alpha pair of Denver's werewolf pack, Kitty and Ben now plan to tie the knot human-style by eloping to Vegas. Kitty is looking forward to sipping fru-fru drinks by the pool and doing her popular radio show on live TV, but her hotel is stocked with werewolf-hating bounty hunters. Elsewhere on the Strip an old-school magician might be wielding the real thing; the vampire community is harboring a dark secret; and the irresistible star of a suspicious animal act is determined to seduce Kitty. Sin City has never been so wild, and this werewolf has never had to fight harder to save not only her wedding, but her very life.

My review:
I really wanted to join in on the tour and read this series, but started having regrets because I am probably the least likely person to read a book on a werewolf. I didn't even know what the word lycanthrope meant. I don't know the legends, and myths of the whole genre. Yep.. I am a newbie to the werewolf world. But guess what? I enjoyed the book! I read part of the first book in the series to kind of get in the groove of the series and of course due to reading deadlines, I had to jump into the last two books right away for this tour. Hey I liked it!

I am going to read the whole series from beginning to end and review each one. I like Kitty, Ben and the whole werewolf thing. The Vegas setting is familiar to me. Fun books!!! I will continue to read on and enjoy. I also like that they aren't too too scary but just enough suspense for me.

I like the fact that these are cuddle up and read in a night or two. I also like Kitty, she is honest, brave and very cool!

Kitty Raises Hell

Description: (Caution - Description may contain a spoiler for those just starting the series)

All Time Favorite Poem - William Wordsworth

This is my all time favorite poem. I am also excited to be reading in April ... Annette Vallon. ( The story of Wordsworth's mistress) I have been waiting to share my favorite poem for when I post on the book, or for daffodil days, but today I just couldn't resist.

I Wandered Lonely as a Cloud
I WANDERED lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host, of golden daffodils;
Beside the lake, beneath the trees,
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.

Continuous as the stars that shine
And twinkle on the milky way,
They stretched in never-ending line
Along the margin of a bay: 10
Ten thousand saw I at a glance,
Tossing their heads in sprightly dance.

The waves beside them danced; but they
Out-did the sparkling waves in glee:
A poet could not but be gay,
In such a jocund company:
I gazed--and gazed--but little thought
What wealth the show to me had brought:

For oft, when on my couch I lie
In vacant or in pensive mood, 20
They flash upon that inward eye
Which is the bliss of solitude;
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils.

I
sigh..........I love this poem.

Now, may I introduce.........

I LOVED, I LOST, I MADE SPAGHETTI

By Giullia Melucci

From failure to fusilli, this deliciously hilarious read tells the story of Giulia Melucci's fizzled romances and the mouth-watering recipes she used to seduce her men, smooth over the lumps, and console herself when the relationships flamed out.

From an affectionate alcoholic, to the classic New York City commitment-phobe, to a hipster aged past his sell date, and not one, but two novelists with Peter Pan complexes, Giulia has cooked for them all. She suffers each disappointment with resolute cheer (after a few tears) and a bowl of pastina (recipe included) and has lived to tell the tale so that other women may go out, hopefully with greater success, and if that's not possible, at least have something good to eat.

Peppered throughout Giulia's delightful and often poignant remembrances are fond recollections of her mother's cooking, the recipes she learned from her, and many she invented on her own inspired by the men in her life. Readers will howl at Giulia's boyfriend-littered past and swoon over her irresistable culinary creations.

Galway Bay Blog Tour

March 17th - Blog Tour - Galway Bay by Mary Pat Kelly and Paddy the Elephant Giveaway!

To start.... Isn' t this just a beautiful book?

I am going to post a full review in the next day or two. I will say that I love this book inside and out! It reminds me of other favorite great books such as The Thorn Birds, Angela's Ashes, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Angela's Ashes, East of Eden and the "Fambly" in Grapes of Wrath. It is a book about a family struggling in horrific circumstances, I love family sagas. I can't say enough about my journey into this book. Like so many powerful stories of oppression and tyranny this book pulled me through a range of emotions, laughter, tears, and truly heart breaking scenes. I can not recall more heroic characters than Micheal and Honora. Because in my opinion the most noble of people in life are a man and woman as mother and father working together for their family in the most simple in sincere life sustaining tasks. Once caught up in this story I didn't want to do anything else.

This is definitely a favorite book of mine and I am pretty sure it will hold high rank for years to come.

Description:

Here at last is one Irish family's epic journey, capturing the tragedy and triumph of the Irish-American experience. In a rousing tale that echoes the myths and legends of Ireland herself, young Honora Keeley and Michael Kelly wed and start a family, inhabiting a hidden Ireland where fishermen and tenant farmers find solace in their ancient faith, songs, stories, and communal celebrations. Selling both their catch--and their crops--to survive, these people subsist on the potato crop--their only staple food. But when blight destroys the potatoes three times in four years, a callous government and uncaring landlords turn a natural disaster into The Great Starvation that will kill one million. Honora and Michael vow their children will live. The family joins two million other Irish refugees in one of the greatest rescues in human history: the Irish Emigration to America. Danger and hardship await them there. Honora and her unconventional sister Maire watch their seven sons as they transform Chicago from a frontier town to the "City of the Century", fight the Civil War, and enlist in the cause of Ireland's freedom. The Kelly clan is victorious. This heroic story sheds brilliant light on the ancestors of today's 44 million Irish Americans.

In the author's colorful and eclectic life, she has written and directed award-winning documentaries on Irish subjects, as well as the dramatic feature Proud. She's been an associate producer on Good Morning America and Saturday Night Live, written books on Martin Scorsese, World War II, and Bosnia, and a novel based on her experiences as a former nun - Special Intentions. She is a frequent contributor to Irish America Magazine and has a PhD in English and Irish literature.

About the Author:

Mary Pat Kelly is the author of a novel Special Intentions, and nonfiction on subjects as varied as Martin Scorcese and the rescue of Scott O'Grady from Bosnia. In her life, she has been everything from a nun to a documentary filmmaker to a producer of short films for "Saturday Night Live". She lives in New York, NY.

Guest Review - Drood - Gary Harris

A review of Drood, by Dan Simmons
By Gary R Harris.

Going into reading Drood I had no expectations of any kind. I knew nothing about the book. I didn't even read the back or anything else. I skipped the soup and salad and went for the meat. The first 10 or so pages had me so off balance I could barely understand the words I was reading.

Wilkie completely takes over before your eyes and his voice and beliefs become your own.
The book made me love an insane attention seeking drug addict in a way that didn't feel stretched. I love everything about this book except for the page count. I don't think this story needed over 700 pages and that although every sentence is perfect, some of the time while I was reading, I was wishing something would happen.

This book is worth the investment in time. Even if it is just to marvel at the power of Dan Simmon's incredible talent.

****the photo above is Gary's son. He asked me of the front cover one time "Is this a good guy Nana?" I say to him... "you have to read the book Elliott."

Okay so how does one pick. I am going straigt to google reader and grasping 8 consecutive names and voila the pressure will be off of me.... :)

I went from the bottom up in my google reader! Because I have to say sometimes being last in the alphabet means I get to reading them last.... so I now vow to read A-Z one day and Z- A the next. How 'bout that?
